5th Corfu Symposium on Managing & Marketing Places

Unique amongst academic conferences, the Corfu Symposium on Managing & Marketing Places offers scholars the opportunity to engage directly with place making, management and marketing issues, as the Symposium includes local businesses, policy makers and other stakeholders eager to implement cutting-edge research, that can make a positive difference to Corfu, the island hosting our event.

The theme of the 2018 symposium, ‘Changing places: Visions of Utopia or Dystopia?’ will explore the utopian or dystopian visions associated with the place practices we study, promote or enact. Whilst we do not expect all authors to provide this reflection themselves, time will be devoted, within the symposium, to collectively discuss and debate the potential impact on places tomorrow from the work we do today.

The full programme will be published early in 2018. The draft programme overview is below:

OUTLINE DRAFT PROGRAMME

Day 1 – Monday 16th April

We will commence Day 1 at 09:00 with registration followed by our welcome and opening addresses. Keynote speeches will be scheduled in each day. Each paper session will allow plenty of time for feedback and discussion. Lunch and Dinner on Day 1 will be at the Symposium Hotel – the Mayor Mon Repos Palace Art Hotel.

Day 2 – Tuesday 17th April

On Day 2 we will be travelling around the North of Corfu – we will make stops at various interesting venues where delegates will have chance to learn more about the island. Paper presentations will also take place ‘on the move’ in these venues. Lunch and dinner at some very special venues will be included in our day, as will coach transport from the Symposium Hotel and back again late in the evening.

Day 3 – Wednesday 18th April

On Day 3 we will be travelling around the South of Corfu – we will make stops at various interesting venues where delegates will have chance to learn more about the island. Paper presentations will also take place ‘on the move’ in these venues. Lunch will be included in our day, as will coach transport from the Symposium Hotel and back again in the afternoon.

We will once again hold an open event where some of our delegates will be invited to present the key points of your research to the local business community.

Later that evening delegates may take up the opportunity of enjoying free time exploring Corfu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Centre (dinner is not included but there are plenty of cafes, tavernas and restaurants in the town).

Day 4 – Thursday 19th April

Paper presentations will take place at the Symposium Hotel where lunch will also be served.

The Symposium will close with a Gala Dinner in Corfu Town with Awards Presentations for Best Paper Prizes
